In the early 1900s, in the outskirts of a village in northern Sweden, a cow finds an infant hidden under a bush in the pasture. The farmer’s wife Mia, who is childless, decides to take care of the baby girl. But it turns out that the girl, called Tovan, isn’t like other children, she seems to be more animal than human.
15 years after having found her, Mia is struggling with shame, as Tovan starts expressing her sexuality. The village priest has her expelled from the confirmation classes and Mia’s husband wants to send Tovan away. Mia realizes that she has to make Tovan fit in at any cost. But between herself and Tovan stands the shame and Mia’s fear of confronting her own desire.
